Welcome 39ers! Is this your 39 and Holding UN-Birthday month? Let’s UNwrap another birthday, and enjoy at least ONE day of non-stop fun. OK, well, I generally party my whole birthday month away, but maybe that's just me.
Let's explore your UN-birthday DECEMBER 2019 ... In need of a break?
Family,
Christmas Birds and … BINGO! … It’s the Holidays!
It’s
no secret. Some of you 39ers have been playing Bingo since childhood, and never
stopped! Long past the kiddie game and fundraising stage, it has grown into a
bona fide gambling institution. That’s okay … if ya win. If ya don’t … well …
that’s why it’s called “gambling”! But somebody is going to win. May as
well be you, right?
Do
you know Bingo has been around in some form or other since the 1500s? True
story. Or so Wiki says. However, it wasn’t until December
1929 that toy merchandiser, Edwin Lowe, spotted the game at a traveling carnival and the rest is
proverbial history.
Besides
Bingo, DECEMBER 39ers, what other birthday party games do you have up
your sleeve? Read on for a new one, and more reasons to celebrate …

December
14th:
Christmas Bird Count Week starts December 14 and
continues through January 5, 2020! Link
… Yes, seriously! “Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, ornithologist Frank M.
Chapman, an early officer in the then-nascent Audubon Society, proposed a new
holiday tradition—a ‘Christmas Bird Census’ that would count birds during
the holidays rather than hunt them.”
December 23rd: Family Roots Day – Speaking of family bird
counting, while you’re at it, use the time to interview family members for
posterity! The Holidays is a perfect time to urge your family to record memories of
childhood and each other. Designate an
interviewer and push the record button; or make a game of it – urge everyone to
write out a favorite Holiday memory, put them in a bowl, and draw out,
one-by-one. Everyone guesses whose memory it is, and the one with the most
right guesses, wins!
Don’t
forget to gather those memories together for later documenting in a family Living Legacy. Another day, you’ll be glad
you did.
December
26th:
National Candy Cane Day – Well shoot, we had to have
something here about sweets! The day after Christmas, you may be
starting your un-decorating … what else to do with those adorable striped candy
canes – but eat them!?

Then,

Think
Pink JUNE 2019 39ers!
While we focus on “39” here, it’s important to remember that
it’s “just a number.”
Whether
you’re 39 again for the first (40), third (43), thirtieth (70),
or sixtieth time (100!), remaining young at heart is the key to
happiness. Well, that and a healthy helping of humor makes a big difference,
too.
Are
you a 39er? Let’s party! Besides Adopt-a-Cat-Month,
the venerable National Flag Week (9th-15th), and Garfield the Cat Day (19th),
and …
Besides Your

11th:
National Cotton Candy Day – After
all, a large majority of county and state fairs delight children of all ages
with their frothy pink confectionaries and everything on-a-stick! Not up to
rubbing elbows with 30,000 of your closest friends at the fair? A wee bit of online
research, and you’ll find it ready to ship!
14th:
In addition
to our nation’s Flag Day, it’s no wonder that the first month of Summer
hosts National Flip Flop Day! And a creative restaurant conjured up the
fun, sunny celebration. The Tropical Smoothie Café not only sponsors the day but offers a creative in-café freebie
when you wear your flip flops to visit them. Not in the mood to trek in the
heat? Give your fave smoothie a whirl in your home blender (perhaps with a yummy liqueur added), and put your feet up, with your best flip flops on!
23rd: More pink! Pink Flamingo
Day (Lawn Ornaments) – Whaaaaat?! You’ve never stuck a fancy pink flamingo
in your yard, or even your in-door plant garden? The jaunty bird is a summer necessity for fun and flash. No longer the redheaded stepchild of lawn ornaments,
do you know you can rent a flock of the pink plastic summer must-haves? Better
yet, buy a pair and decorate them for every holiday, OR visit your local zoo and checkout live Pink Flamingos! And Pink
thinks she has all the fun …
Enough

other Zodiac sign can. Though crusty on the surface, their loyal and loving
nature makes it easy to forgive the occasional brusque manner.

May 2019 ~ Absurdity is a
Great Bad-Mood-Buster
As a
39er (you’ve turned 39 at least once), you may periodically feel the stagnation
of mid-life. It’s that time between your carefree twenties and thirties, and …
well … every year after.
The doldrums as they were once called, can strike at any
time; hopefully, not for long. Often it takes only a hug from a loved one, an
unexpected fortuitous event, or even a moment of laughter to draw you back into
the sunshine.
I
had one of those moments of the latter, today. By sharing it with you, perhaps
you too, will see the utter necessity for absurdity and a hearty belly laugh.
Nearly
to the end of perusing Brownielocks’ May Calendar of odd and average, official
and unofficial holidays, I spotted this one: “Mike, The Headless Chicken Day:
31-6/1 Link.” With a smirk, I almost
brushed by it to return to work, but my curious muse wouldn’t let me off that
easy.
Time/Life image archives |
I
clicked the link and found that not only is it a real festival weekend in Fruita, Colorado,
it’s in its 21st year! I had
to click on the History button and learn about Mike.
Once I read, “This festival is dedicated to the amazing story of one chicken’s
will to live,” I was hooked.
Yes,
it’s a true story of a chicken destined to grace the dinner table. When the axe
swung, he indeed, ran around like the proverbial “chicken with its head cut off”—but
by the miracle of creation, he lived!
I
kid you not. It was 1945 and Mike’s determination to live was even documented
by the University of Utah, and he toured key U.S. cities before succumbing to
his ultimate fate, eighteen months later.
This
story reminds us that 39 and Holding
… for decades … is a gift. But you must be determined to claim it, no matter
what your circumstances. And absurdity is a great bad-mood-buster. As one of my
39AHC designs says, “That’s my story, an’ I’m stickin’ to it!”
39er Fitness
and Fun
This
oddball 39 and Holding Club article is a message to stop and smell the May flowers
and remember how precious life is at any age. Especially when you can still
laugh. So with that in mind, what else did I find at Brownielocks? Some great
days in May to take your mind off the beaten path of life:
May 5th: Lemonade Day; spend a day with your inner
child and make lemonade!
May 11th: Mother Ocean Day; help bring
awareness to the Earth’s life-blood and the damage we are doing to it. Mother
Ocean needs our help. Give your time or donation.
May 5-11th: National Wildflower Week;

there is dispute, but the first published print offering of the word "yuppie" was made by journalist
Dan Rottenberg in Chicago magazine. Were you or your
parents a “Young Urban Professional”? Nearly eleven years later, “Time magazine
proclaimed the death of the "yuppie" in a mock obituary.” Um, not so
fast … they came baaaack!
May 21st: My how time flies when you’re

wonder—or agonize over—how you became the person you are at this moment?
Some
of us go through life without ever delving into their psyche. They just are. Others question every move they
make. Why do we do that? No one truly knows. Life is full of mysteries, and by
March when we’re beginning to get cabin fever from winter’s hibernation, our
minds wander even if our bodies can’t.
We
can ask all the questions we want, and even come up with answers … at least

And what do you think a collection of wonderfully personal
letters once owned by the Rolling Stones sold for? They also brought an estimated $288 (£220). For me, worth

March 20th: Though England strived to

Rock fans reveled in pirate
radio stations that broadcast offshore, anchored in the Atlantic’s deep
