Happy UN-Birthday 2019!

Welcome 39ers! Is this your 39 and Holding UN-Birthday month? Let’s UNwrap another birthday, and enjoy at least ONE day of non-stop fun. OK, well, I generally party my whole birthday month away, but maybe that's just me.

Birthdays are important. Not because we're a year older—it’s simply a great day to reflect, rejoice, and rejuvenate. Join us at 39 and Holding where we’re forever young—with ATT-i-tude!

Let's explore your UN-birthday DECEMBER 2019 ... In need of a break?

Family, Christmas Birds and … BINGO! … It’s the Holidays!

It’s no secret. Some of you 39ers have been playing Bingo since childhood, and never stopped! Long past the kiddie game and fundraising stage, it has grown into a bona fide gambling institution. That’s okay … if ya win. If ya don’t … well … that’s why it’s called “gambling”! But somebody is going to win. May as well be you, right?

Do you know Bingo has been around in some form or other since the 1500s? True story. Or so Wiki says. However, it wasn’t until December 1929 that toy merchandiser, Edwin Lowe, spotted the game at a traveling carnival and the rest is proverbial history.

Besides Bingo, DECEMBER 39ers, what other birthday party games do you have up your sleeve? Read on for a new one, and more reasons to celebrate …

Along with Your UN-Birthday ~ Happy DECEMBER Celebrations
December 14th: Christmas Bird Count Week starts December 14 and continues through January 5, 2020!  Link … Yes, seriously! “Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman, an early officer in the then-nascent Audubon Society, proposed a new holiday tradition—a ‘Christmas Bird Census’ that would count birds during the holidays rather than hunt them.”
And you can join in! Wouldn’t this be a fun event for the whole family?!

December 23rd: Family Roots Day – Speaking of family bird counting, while you’re at it, use the time to interview family members for posterity! The Holidays is a perfect time to urge your family to record memories of
childhood and each other. Designate an interviewer and push the record button; or make a game of it – urge everyone to write out a favorite Holiday memory, put them in a bowl, and draw out, one-by-one. Everyone guesses whose memory it is, and the one with the most right guesses, wins!
Don’t forget to gather those memories together for later documenting in a family Living Legacy. Another day, you’ll be glad you did.

December 26th: National Candy Cane Day – Well shoot, we had to have something here about sweets! The day after Christmas, you may be starting your un-decorating … what else to do with those adorable striped candy canes – but eat them!?

For 39ers who Follow the Stars
Is it any wonder the Archer leads us into December, with an eye on the New Year? Sagittarian 39ers (11/22-12/21) are habitually upbeat and always seeking new experiences, like a good party. You may see more than one vivacious Sagittarian strutting into the festivities this season, empowered in purple and with a hint of gold, of course.

Then, in strolls destination-minded Capricorn (12/22-01/19). That is, if you’re able to pry them away from business. They may love a good party, but work is their true paramour. We need the Earthy Caps to guide us solidly into the new year and decade, with conservative determination. Don’t be surprised if their New Year’s resolutions are already written down and prioritized!

January 1, 2020 is not only the beginning of a bright New Year, but offers the promise of a fresh New Decade. Make 2020 your year of golden goals in spirit and deed.

NOVEMBER 2019 ~ Many Thanks for Pets, Peanut Butter & Jukeboxes!

In addition to National Gratitude Month—after all, Thanksgiving is November’s premiere holiday—there are many other ways to give thanks and celebrate your life. C’mon along 39ers!

Along with Your UN-Birthday ~ Happy NOVEMBER Celebrations
It isn’t all about Thanksgiving, you know. Well … maybe it is. But still, turkey isn’t the only celebrated food in November. Last one to the table buys the wine ….

It’s National Peanut Butter Lovers Month! With any luck, someone in your potluck feasts this month will bake a batch or two of Holiday Peanut Butter cookies. My favorite! And yet, I didn’t know …
Peanut butter was originally made for people with no teeth. Although I knew of one, I also didn’t know …Two peanut farmers have been elected president of the USA – Virginia's Thomas Jefferson and Georgia's Jimmy Carter.
In a high-pressure environment, peanut butter can be turned into diamonds. How cool is that?! NOW they have my attention!

Looking for love in all the wrong places? Celebrate Adopt A Senior Pet Month and revel in unconditional love! Humans aren’t the only 39ers—older pets tend to be less appreciated, so show your love and count your best playful years together.

And a designation near and dear to my ol’ heart: Family Stories Month*! Have you thought about it? Leaving your legacy, I mean. Since we don't have a crystal ball that tells us when we'll ... well, you know ... leaving your legacy at any age is important. Do it now.
Thanksgiving is the perfect time to reminisce and listen for stories you may not have heard before; give your family and friends your full focus. Maybe even set a recorder or camera to cover your golden turkey day (or tofu, or other scrumptious meal) for posterity—and your Book of Family Stories.

Usually I also list a couple of fun day-events to celebrate too but have decided from this month forward to give only one special day a mention. Month-long celebrations feel more appropriate. So what’s on tap for November 2019? Get your dancing shoes on and let’s par-TAY!

However, RePlay Magazine has a 2016 article that tells you all about it, and it’s just tooooooo much of a fun day not to list it for your enjoyment.
While the jukebox is glorified in Rock & Roll, it hit the “juke joints” long before the 1950s when popular music began to Rock. Now an iconic piece of musical history, the once ubiquitous mechanical bar band is fondly remembered in more than one song. **Joe Diffie made it clear, ♪ Fill my boots up with sand, put a stiff drink in my hand | Prop me up beside the jukebox if I die ♪ (1993)

Do you have any secrets? Of course, we all do. If you count an inquisitive Scorpio (10/23-11/21) as your friend, you won’t have them for long! Scorpios make great investigators and researchers, as they delve into the depths of anything that catches their attention. Including you! However, their integrity won’t let them tell unless you OK it.
No worries with a lively Sagittarian (11/22-12/21), as they’re too busy to dive below the surface, preferring to plan your next 39er party or extreme adventure outing. Make no mistake though, they aren’t frivolous. Sagittarians are focused as they take aim and home in on the horizon. Ambitious and driven also describes the often very successful Sagittarian. Count yourself fortunate to be in their inner circle.

Who Doesn’t Love October?!

Despite all efforts to be otherwise, I am an optimist. I see virtue in every month, but October is truly unique. It’s fun, intricate, intense, and intriguing.

From the turn of fall leaves to cooler nights, from the first blush of Holiday excitement, to the mystique of Halloween and Samhain, October stands out in the annual parade of months.

As do our stand-out October 39ers! Break out the champagne cocktails and let’s get this month rolling in pie dough!

Along with Your UN-Birthday ~ Happy OCTOBER Celebrations
Since I began this month visiting a friend in Texas and reminded of my rural NorCal upbringing, October continues my “Howdy” fun and urges you to put a twang in your talk for Country Music Month … did you know it was declared so by Richard Nixon in 1970? It seems like Nixon ghosts are all over this October too, as comparisons with another president abound.
Moving right along, we can’t forget that before the Holiday pies and specialty cocktails appear in our hands, we must celebrate Pizza Month! Yum! Like we need a specific month to observe this iconic food. I try to enjoy it at least once every month!

So, coming off September’s National Drink Beer Day (28th), and with this month featuring Pizza, the logical next step is …
October 9th: International Beer AND Pizza Day! Yahoo! My favorite month AND my favorite food and libation. I’m all in, how about you?

October 15th: Many Boomer 39ers will have fun commemorating I Love Lucy Day! While there is no sponsoring link for this special day, it has been established on the Brownielocks calendar site, and from one redhead to another, “You Go Girl!” In all her fun lunacy, Lucy (Lucille Désirée Ball) was an early inspiration for independent women, even as she worked within her “traditional” marriage.
Lucy strove for equality and recognition. And though quite the businesswoman, her heart was always in comedy. Not immediately appreciated, Time magazine had this to say about the revered lady and her show: “I Love Lucy premiered on this day, Oct. 15, in 1951, TIME’s TV listings acknowledged as a ‘a triumph of bounce over bumbling material,’ an ‘engagingly’ funny show starring a good actress and her ‘adequate’ husband. The secret of staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age. Lucille Ball

October 26th:
Bet you’ve been waiting for this one! Howl at The Moon Night … awwwwwooooo! With fifteen locations around the country and on the Norwegian cruise line, this enterprising bar deserves applause—so let’s “Clap for the Wolfman”! I never pass up an October without recognizing the Rock Radio DJ with the most celebrated howl on the air—Wolfman Jack! It’s all accordin’ to how your boogaloo situation stands!
We don’t need a full moon* to howl, but in case you’re wondering, it’s on Sunday the 13th this month—*The full moon is considered unlucky if it occurs on Sunday but lucky if it occurs on Monday—so clear the bad luck and howl at the New Moon on the 28th, just in time to give Halloween a little starshine!

October 31st: Of course, it’s Halloween! And for the Irish 39ersSlàinte! (Cheers!) It is also **Samhain, which spawned Halloween celebrations and a cauldron of legends around the globe, about 2,000 years ago, give or take 500 or so. **At Samhain the division between this world and the otherworld was at its thinnest, allowing spirits to pass through. Boo!

For 39ers who Follow the Stars
People-pleasing Librans lead into the month and transformative Scorpios turn it into a party!
As gentle as Scorpios are mysterious, Libra (09/23 – 10/22) starts off October with a wing and a prayer, and promise of some monetary gains. But don’t forget to balance your scales, so it doesn’t go out as quickly as it comes in!

Know any Scorpios? Beware! (Even more so than usual …) Scorpio (10/23 – 11/21) rules the month. Although Scorpio is as intriguing as ever, unpredictable behavior may make everyone around them a little leery. Rein it in, Scorpios, so you’re ready to meet whatever comes Halloween night!

The History Channel, however, tells a different story … Long considered a harbinger of bad luck, Friday the 13th has inspired a late 19th-century secret society, an early 20th-century novel, a horror film franchise and not one but two unwieldy terms—paraskavedekatriaphobia and friggatriskaidekaphobia—that describe fear of this supposedly unlucky day. August 2019 ~ 39ers … Button, Button, Who’s Got the Party?

Okay, I know August is often called the “dog days of summer.” It’s hot, muggy, and generally miserable. However, 39ers celebrate every month, and always find something to party around!

If you’re ready for fun, August 39ers, startle your friends and family, with a good-natured growl for … Arrr-gust: International Pirate Month!

Next, let’s get creative with a couple of button-down Rock & Roll weeks …
August 4th-10th: National Button Week will have you sewing up a storm and scouring vintage shops for great retro buttons to add sparkle to your creations! Perhaps something to wear for …

August 9th-17th: It’s Elvis Week! Get “All Shook Up” and do the “Bossa Nova, Baby.” Elvis may be gone these many years (January 1935 – August 1977), but he still inspires us to remember, “It’s Now or Never”! And now … let the real parties begin …

Besides AUGUST UN-Birthdays ~ More Happy Celebrations
August 2nd-4th: Twins Day I know that’s three days, not one, but apparently it became so popular, they went for the full weekend. Now, twins are something I happen to focus a specialty on—as I have a matching male pair. By the time they turned twelve, my go-to line when asked about the experience was, “They love to hate each other (because they’re always fighting), and hate to love each other (‘cause they can never stay angry with each other long).
THE big Twins Day happens in, of course—Twinsburg, Ohio—with a celebration of multiple births. And yes, you’ll be seeing double, if not more!

August 17th: Baby Boomer's Recognition Day conspicuously lands on a Woodstock anniversary day! Not that we need to recognize our contributions to the world, but Boomers are often bashed more than a bit by young’uns for making the world more wrong than right. In addition to not considering the generations before Boomers that bequeathed their share of broken dreams, I like to refer to the “Me Generation Boomers” as the breakout boomers. We broke the Fifties mold of complacency and paved the way for questioning the status quo, while reaching for a higher consciousness (sometimes literally).
So even if you’re not at that elevated age, channel your inner hippie, your raging Rocker, or your peaceful protestor and wear a retro tie-dyed shirt, vintage band button and rose-colored glasses, or at the very least, distressed Levi’s (yes, we started that) and Rock On!

August 28th: National Bow Tie Day—not comfortable in vintage Birkenstock sandals and a fringe jacket? Then
go even further back to a retro early 20th century style that just keeps on truckin’ … Of course, the bow tie is much older than the that, traipsing through the years since the 17th century.
From royalty to black tie events, to a staple of popular comedians, the ubiquitous bow tie still makes stylish appearances. Fun Wiki observation: “The bow tie hints at intellectualism, real or feigned, and sometimes suggests technical acumen, perhaps because it is so hard to tie.” So grab a clip-on and join the fun!
A few famous bow tie wearers: Charlie Chaplin (pic./left), Stan Laurel, Jerry Lewis, Orville Redenbacher (the popcorn guy), and Bill Nye “the science guy.”

August 31st: Bacon Day—YUM! Have you searched the Internet for bacon recipes lately? Oh, my … it’s a scary gastrointestinal mecca! The Food Network offers fifty different types of bacon appetizers—give one a try! I’m drooling over the Bacon Crab Cakes.

For 39ers who Follow the Stars
Summer parties are not complete without a 39er Leo (07/23-08/22) UN-birthday guest or honoree. You’ll likely meet one or two of these gregarious folks this month, but look out for the impish Virgos (08/23-09/22). They’re no slouches in the party department!
Don’t worry, you’ll be able to tell them apart. The lively Leos can’t help but grab your attention in any gathering, even during hot and steamy heatwaves. Though Virgos may sneak in while your head’s turned, don’t be surprised to feel a big, wet (but refreshing) kiss planted on your cheek. They can be very affectionate.
Also commanding attention in August is its stately birth month flower, the Gladiolus stalk, personifying its nickname of “sword lily.” August 39ers, set your stance, and take your slice of summer fun to the hilt!
To cool off, peer into the depths of this month’s soothing green birthstone. Many wearers believe stories of the Peridot’s magical powers and healing properties, as it mesmerizes with multi-layered cool, green facets.

14th: In addition to our nation’s Flag Day, it’s no wonder that the first month of Summer hosts National Flip Flop Day! And a creative restaurant conjured up the fun, sunny celebration. The Tropical Smoothie Café not only sponsors the day but offers a creative in-café freebie when you wear your flip flops to visit them. Not in the mood to trek in the heat? Give your fave smoothie a whirl in your home blender (perhaps with a yummy liqueur added), and put your feet up, with your best flip flops on!

23rd: More pink! Pink Flamingo Day (Lawn Ornaments) – Whaaaaat?! You’ve never stuck a fancy pink flamingo in your yard, or even your in-door plant garden? The jaunty bird is a summer necessity for fun and flash. No longer the redheaded stepchild of lawn ornaments, do you know you can rent a flock of the pink plastic summer must-haves? Better yet, buy a pair and decorate them for every holiday, OR visit your local zoo and checkout live Pink Flamingos! And Pink thinks she has all the fun …

Enough for today? Exhausted from all the heat and candy and running after pink birds? Nah …

Is it any wonder Garfield is a Gemini (05/21-06/20)? He’s the perfect twin personality in a mind-melding tabby.

Geminis put their quick minds to work on whatever is in front of them at the moment … work, errands, party. Did someone say party?! The quintessential party planner, Gemini finds festive ways to amaze and create a stellar gala for a friend, or themselves!

On the 21st, the caring Cancer (06/21-07/22) brings smoothies to the Gemini hangovers and nurtures them as no other Zodiac sign can. Though crusty on the surface, their loyal and loving nature makes it easy to forgive the occasional brusque manner.

June heats up with the twins and the crab … put your flip flops on and pour another vodka smoothie to celebrate!

May 2019 ~ Absurdity is a Great Bad-Mood-Buster
As a 39er (you’ve turned 39 at least once), you may periodically feel the stagnation of mid-life. It’s that time between your carefree twenties and thirties, and … well … every year after.
The doldrums as they were once called, can strike at any time; hopefully, not for long. Often it takes only a hug from a loved one, an unexpected fortuitous event, or even a moment of laughter to draw you back into the sunshine.
I had one of those moments of the latter, today. By sharing it with you, perhaps you too, will see the utter necessity for absurdity and a hearty belly laugh.
Nearly to the end of perusing Brownielocks’ May Calendar of odd and average, official and unofficial holidays, I spotted this one: “Mike, The Headless Chicken Day: 31-6/1 Link.” With a smirk, I almost brushed by it to return to work, but my curious muse wouldn’t let me off that easy.
Time/Life image archives
I clicked the link and found that not only is it a real festival weekend in Fruita, Colorado, it’s in its 21st year! I had to click on the History button and learn about Mike. Once I read, “This festival is dedicated to the amazing story of one chicken’s will to live,” I was hooked.
Yes, it’s a true story of a chicken destined to grace the dinner table. When the axe swung, he indeed, ran around like the proverbial “chicken with its head cut off”—but by the miracle of creation, he lived!
I kid you not. It was 1945 and Mike’s determination to live was even documented by the University of Utah, and he toured key U.S. cities before succumbing to his ultimate fate, eighteen months later.
This story reminds us that 39 and Holding … for decades … is a gift. But you must be determined to claim it, no matter what your circumstances. And absurdity is a great bad-mood-buster. As one of my 39AHC designs says, “That’s my story, an’ I’m stickin’ to it!”
39er Fitness and Fun
This oddball 39 and Holding Club article is a message to stop and smell the May flowers and remember how precious life is at any age. Especially when you can still laugh. So with that in mind, what else did I find at Brownielocks? Some great days in May to take your mind off the beaten path of life:
May 5th: Lemonade Day; spend a day with your inner child and make lemonade!
May 11th: Mother Ocean Day; help bring awareness to the Earth’s life-blood and the damage we are doing to it. Mother Ocean needs our help. Give your time or donation.
May 5-11th: National Wildflower Week; smell the flowers!
May 25th: National Wine Day (My personal fave)
May 31-June 1st: Mike, The Headless Chicken Day
39 Years Ago this Month ~ MAY 1980
May 1st:About that Urban Renaissance...” Wiki says there is dispute, but the first published print offering of the word "yuppie" was made by journalist Dan Rottenberg in Chicago magazine. Were you or your parents a “Young Urban Professional”? Nearly eleven years later, “Time magazine proclaimed the death of the "yuppie" in a mock obituary.” Um, not so fast … they came baaaack!
May 21st: My how time flies when you’re counting the number of Star Wars franchises! The Empire Strikes Back released on this date in the United States; the second of eleven feature films. Wiki: highest-grossing film of the year (just as its predecessor, Star Wars, was three years prior—also in May).

May flowers for Moms! Since MAY 39er moms—and the rest of you deliberate and steadfast Taurus guys and gals (April 20-May 20)—are based in earthy complexity. Isn’t that a mom attitude?
Taurus 39ers are also multi-faceted like the charming cuts of this month’s fine emerald birthstone. Their depth goes beyond the surface and roots calmly its many mindful crevices.

But the emerald’s twinkle shimmers brightly over quick-witted and chatty Geminis too (May 21-June 20). Just try to leave them out of the party! And you’ll struggle to keep up with the energetic twin-sign as they rush through the month, adding their seemingly magic touch to every moment.

APRIL 2019 ~ Late is a State of Mind

And the state of my mind is absolute chaos … obviously, as I try to play catch-up, with the blur of past two weeks-plus …

39er Fitness and Fun

For your physical and mental health to remain young … know when it’s time to take a break. I meant to write a quick “Be back soon with April’s article …” before taking my break, because I’d simply run out of time. But time is an elusive creature. So here we are on the 19th of the month. No excuses … but …

© 2019 LRochelle; San Diego Harbor

As life will often do … while the past week’s glow from a fantastic five-day hiatus at San Diego’s harbor area began to fade into daily routine, I was struck with another time-sucking event. Unfortunately, this one wasn’t as much fun.

Details unnecessary, suffice it to say, back at home while simply parked at the curb basking in the Spring sun, my cute little PT Cruiser was struck by a big ol’ mean SUV. It is now facing a “totaled” insurance designation and a salvage title. Sigh.

An integral part of the 39 and Holding Club is ATT-i-tude. In all the emotional events of life, attitude is so important. Am I angry? Frustrated? Sad? Of course. But channeling anger and emotion into my work while I deal with mundane issues of the accident’s aftermath, is crucial to dealing with it in a positive way. I credit my parents for the ability to do so, and believe that remaining positive helps anyone stay “39 and Holding” … with a smile. (Ok, it might be a forced smile, but I’m working on it!)

Because this intro is rather long and will have such a short life span (less than two weeks), I shall be brief with the rest, while offering an apology to all the April 39ers. Let’s party on …

39 Years Ago this Month ~ APRIL 1980
You or your parents may recall that a new home in 1980 averaged $69,000, while a gallon of gas was a blessedly $1.19. And remember the totally tubular sling chair? They’re making a comeback. Ahhhh, the good ol’ days. APRIL 1980 back at ya …

April 14th:Kramer vs. Kramer” a now-beloved movie starring box office icons of the era, Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep, took the 52nd Academy Awards Best Movie honors. The critically acclaimed film gave us an intimate look at divorce … albeit with a funny edge.

April 14th: Heavy Metal fan? Here come the headbangers! The genre came on strong with the U.K. release of Iron Maiden’s self-titled album. ♪ Hit the Gas and Here I Go | I'm Running Free Yeah, I'm Running Free

After regaling us with their spirited, energetic, often flighty personality Aries (March 21st – April 19th) turns the month over to reality-based and earth-bound Taurus (April 20th – May 20th) as we celebrate Earth Day (22nd). The pragmatic sign guides us firmly into the rites of Spring.

Have you ever noticed that both Sun Signs feature horns? Hmmmm … says a lot about free-thinking Aries the Ram, and stubborn … I mean, practical and steadfast … Taurus the Bull.

Shopping for birthday gifts? Red flows dominantly through the Aries psyche, whether they know it or not; and of course, Earth green with tinges of golden brown falls into Taurus’s healthy spectrum. But it’s the clarity of the lustrous diamond that will capture the attention of both, as April’s glittering gemstone.

March 39ers March to a Different Drumbeat

What makes you … you? Do you ever wonder—or agonize over—how you became the person you are at this moment?

Some of us go through life without ever delving into their psyche. They just are. Others question every move they make. Why do we do that? No one truly knows. Life is full of mysteries, and by March when we’re beginning to get cabin fever from winter’s hibernation, our minds wander even if our bodies can’t.

We can ask all the questions we want, and even come up with answers … at least some type of justification … but there are no right and wrong suppositions to define the mysteries of life. SO—let’s skip the philosophical and get right into March 39ers’ party-hearty parties!

39er Fitness and Fun

Slowly march into your exercises this month (if you’ve been lax this winter), to softly stretch your muscles after the long winter’s nap. I’ve heard accolades of how Tai Chi is physically and mentally beneficial, plus gentle on your body, though I have not yet given it a try. How about you? Perhaps it’s time.
Tai Chi is not too strenuous and oddly calming, I understand. Even the venerable Mayo Clinic suggests, “Often described as meditation in motion, tai chi promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements.” Time to limber up!

39 Years Ago this Month ~ MARCH 1980
Sotheby’s London auction house got into the Rock & Roll mood to offer up several items 39 Years Ago that would be worth considerably more today …
March 3rd: a napkin signed by Elvis Presley from the Rivera Hotel in Las Vegas fetched around $656 (₤500). Wonder if it was “used”?
Not into Elvis? Then you must be a Beatles fan! Four U.S. dollar bills – one each signed by a Beatle, actually went for less (collectively) at approximately $288 (£220). Bet they’d be worth way more than Elvis today!
Mi Amigo 1974; sank 1980
And what do you think a collection of wonderfully personal letters once owned by the Rolling Stones sold for? They also brought an estimated $288 (£220). For me, worth would be in knowing whether they were TO or FROM the venerable Stones. Anyone can write to them …
March 20th: Though England strived to control R&R Radio stations, despite such iconic British artists, England’s Rock fans reveled in pirate radio stations that broadcast offshore, anchored in the Atlantic’s deep seas. On this date in 1980, a ravaging storm sank Mi Amigo, Radio Caroline’s favorite ship, leaving only its mast above water. The DJs narrowly escaped a watery demise in a daring rescue. DJ Stevie Gordon’s parting words to listeners, “For the moment from all of us, goodbye and God bless.”

Pensive Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20) and airy Aries 39ers (Mar 21-April 19) march grandly through the month, step-dancing to their own drumbeat.
Lighten up Pisces it’s your month to party! You feel everyone else’s pain; but there is only so much you can do. Empathize or sympathize, whichever is your strength, then take care of yourself.
While we appreciate Pisces’ help, let’s applaud the valiant and audacious Aries—always ready to grab the bull by the horns. With success the likely outcome, we can forgive their extremes and enjoy their energy.
Whether you favor the Zodiac colors of light green for lively Pisces or passionate red for Aries, Kelly green will dominate Irish American Heritage MonthSlainte! (Cheers!)

February 2019 ~ 39ers are in it for the LOVVVVE

Long before healthy living became a “thing” St. Valentine’s Day meant loading up on chocolate, schoolyard declarations of puppy love, and handmade Valentines.

For adults, it’s the optimum day to propose with a gi-normous diamond ring … and loads of chocolate.

We urge 39 and Holding Club’s 39ers to celebrate the venerable non-holiday, or not … just do what makes your heart happy. Speaking of which …

39er Fitness and Fun
Ah yes … the month of L-O-V-E. And American Heart Month of course. So while you’re taking care of your significant other’s heart, or if you’re alone but not lonely, don’t forget your own red-blooded heart. Get it pumping with a fun romp down Memory Lane …

39 Years Ago this Month ~ FEBRUARY 1980
February 13th: Were you holding hands with your squeeze at the 1980 Winter Olympics? The frosty XIII Winter Olympics was Lake Placid, New York’s second hosting opportunity. Popular for winter sports, it was apt that the Olympics’ mascot that year came in the form of adorable “Roni” raccoon, because the furry mammal’s encircled eyes are reminiscent of winter sports goggles. Oooooo-K.
Remember the final day? Famed brass musician, Chuck Mangione, composed and performed the games’ instrumental theme song, “Give It All You Got.” Great advice …

February 23rd: Or perhaps you remember 39 Years Ago the Queen song that showed the love for their Rock & Roll roots. “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” rose to the top of radio charts February 1980.
The throwback tune gave Freddie Mercury’s vocals a rare showcase as it tripped into the Rockabilly genre. If you weren’t in love with them before, you likely felt the love by the time it hit #2 on WLS/Chicago’s MusicRadio 89 chart. This thing … called love | I just … can't handle it

Are you a February 39er? The color gods paint you (and your hair) in a kaleidoscope of hues—early Feb quirky but caring Aquarian Water-bearers (Jan 20-Feb 18) can re-style the palette of your moods with turquoise green, or deep purple.
Or not so radically, a “normal” bright blue adds a refreshing hue to your wardrobe and/or hair accessories when paired with Pantone’s “Living Coral” for the New Year.
If you’re walking through the sands of time with Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20) pals, all shades of green keep you cool with them. Dreamy, sensitive, and intuitively spiritual, Pisces identifies with the month of love for a reason. Their compassion and empathy make everyone around them feel loved.

January 2019 ~ From 1980 to 2019 ~ Welcome New 39ers!

What I’ve considered “vintage” most of my adult life, is the 1960s and ‘70s. But those years are now “classic” at best—just plain “old” at worst. Vintage to most young people today, are the 1980s, 1990s and soon, the 2010s. Sigh. On a Happy New Year note, we begin a new era of 39ers

So with a flip of the calendar page, we slip into 2019, turning waning Gen Xers into 39ersthose born in 1980. Welcome to the most elite and inane club on Earth and Happy New Year!

What’s so special about 1980? To start with, it was a leap year! We’ll have fun with that in February. But first, let’s explore the month that offers an open door to new beginnings, its apt name originating from Latin for door (ianua) …

39 Years Ago this Month ~ January 1980
Many of us dreamily planned our “Escape” with Rupert Holmes as he topped the radio charts this month. Something Sir Paul might also have considered …

January 16th: Arriving in Tokyo for a concert tour, McCartney and Wings ended up grounded. That’s what happens when you travel with close to a half-pound of MJ in your luggage “for personal use.” That’s a lot of personal toking. The Japanese authorities weren’t buying it—nor allowing him to buy his way out—totally. Paul spent nine days in the Tokyo Narcotics Detention Center, and deported. My, how things have changed!

January 29th: Perhaps a mind-blowing walk around The British Toy and Hobby Fair (Earl’s Court, London) would have been safer for McCartney. There, he could have discovered the now-ubiquitous Rubik’s Cube that made a splashy international entrance into educational toys. Though invented in 1974, Professor Ernõ Rubik had no idea his educational toy would “go viral” when young, eager minds demanded it. It still boggles the mind …

January 2019 is a business-oriented month for many, and the strategically minded Capricorn (12/22/18-01/19/19) is no slouch in business. Don’t be surprised if you see them busily listing their financial goals for the year. Caps are of the few who will actually attain them! Not known for their flexibility, try to help your early January 39er friends to be more flexible. They may not admit it, but they need you.
The latter part of January caters to the quirky, free-spirited Aquarians (01/20-02/18). As Tarot.com explains, “Aquarius' eternal quest for knowledge turns up notions that range from brilliant to insane.” I’ve known a few of them! Aquarians are never lacking for witty and entertaining conversation, but you need to help these personally aloof 39ers explore their emotions a little more.

Last summer our favorite orange tabby cat, Garfield, turned 40. His buddy Nermal couldn’t resist a dig, but complimented him instead. It went like this … Nermal: So, you’re now 40. Garfield: Yes, I am.
They look at each other for a moment … then, a little disconcerted, Nermal: You look good … Garfield: Aging well is the best revenge.
