Leapin’ Lizards, 39ers! It’s December 1978!
Ah
yes, the late ‘70s. Music flowed around us in slivers of love and broken hippie
beads, as swirling Psychedelic music
ignored Disco and morphed
more forcefully, into Heavy Metal’s crashing beat. Well, for some.
39 Years Ago this Month ~ December
1978
The
music charts, however, spouted love and lust for December 1978. Fans of WKTQ/Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, swooned
with Neil Diamond and Barbara Streisand’s #1 hit, “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers”; while WLS/Chicagoland’s idea of Holiday
hotness was chart-topper, “Hot Child in the City” (Nick Gilder).
Personally,
I grooved to an up-and-coming hit, “Double Vision,” by Foreigner; obviously in the
Christmas spirits … I mean, spirit …
with some yummy eggnog. 😊 It entered the scene
at #26 on KHJ’s Top Thirty in Los Angeles, but
already kicking the top ten at WLS. Fill
my eyes with that double vision …♪
Speaking
of blurry vision … what’s that … up in the sky? It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No,
it’s … it’s …
Superman! Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a
locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound …
He
bounded into our lives in a December 10, 1978 preview at the Kennedy Center,
and flew over gaping mouths across the US in its national debut, December 15th.
Just
for the record, there can never be another Superman to rival Christopher Reeve.

November 17th:

39ers Soar Through September
Shhhhhh, don’t tell anyone … but it’s
only three months until Christmas! Argh!
In September, we dutifully succumb
to The Season. Kids of all ages
return to school, starting it off with a flurry. From now through end of the
year, there is a key activity or holiday that punctuates every month. It goes
like this:
September – Major buying month, even if you aren’t of school age, because hey, the sales are great!
And admit it—you’re already subconsciously “checking your list.”
October – Owwwwooooo!
Don’t let the goblins get ya as we gear up for Halloween magic and madness.
November – Be thankful
for everything you have, have had, or will have. Or, just be grateful you made
it to another Thanksgiving
and honor the memories of those you love, who didn’t.
December – Well, we’ve failed
to make this once-reverently festive month “politically correct” so I say, do
what makes you feel good. Whether you’re Christian, on which Christmas is based, or celebrate for other reasons, it should be a Season of charity toward all, as we plunge
head-long into the New Year.
The Season begins
mildly enough with September. Did I say mildly? Ha. I’ve already been accosted
by three September 39ers loudly lamenting
their advancing ages.
First of all, none of them are as old as I am.
So shut up. Secondly, what are we all about here? So, shut up AND remember, you’re only 39 AND HOLDING! Pat yourself on the

August 39ers Celebrate Dog Days of

Argh! How did we get to August
already? Well, as much as we love our summer
splashes and BBQ blasts, let’s hope the Dog Days of Summer go quickly! Not
without a party or two, of course. Happy UN-Birthday, 39ers!
Aligning with the rise of Sirius, the
brightest star in Earth’s night sky and a prominent star in the Canis Major
constellation—get it? “Canis” as in “dog”—August has earned its Dog Days of Summer status.
Even the ancient Greeks recorded its “heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms,
lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck.” Wow. That about sums it up!
Though interesting and great
party-talk info, enough ancient history and astronomy. It’s time to feature the
happenings of that timeless age, only

39 Years Ago this Month ~ August
1978
Amongst the spy novels that have always
been popular, August 1978’s bestselling books also included two tomes that
explored the human psyche in very different ways:
The World According to Garp (John Irving), and popular
columnist, Erma Bombeck’s If Life Is A Bowl Of Cherries, What Am I Doing in the Pits?
With feminism in full fever, Irving
hit a nerve in his rather dark story of life events, as relevant today as they
were fresh, exploratory, and antagonistic, then. The action in his first
bestseller begins with a feminist nurse who yearns for a child but shuns
marriage, and her extreme lengths to become pregnant. Enter son, T.S. Garp …
Irving is a masterful writer; and as
in many writers, his prose often reveals bouts of inner disturbance, encircled
by genius insight.
On a lighter note, for decades the
illustrious Ms. Bombeck led many a lady to love her witty, astute life-tips.
Beginning as a humor columnist, engaging us with the eccentricities of family
absurdities, complete with dog, Bombeck’s books take life a little further into
our psyches, and strikes a nerve of a different color than Irving …
Trading on the then-trending adage, “Life
is just a bowl of cherries,” Bombeck’s book regales us with life-bombs to which
we can still identify. “I’ve always worried a lot and frankly I’m good at it,”
admits Bombeck. “… I worry about scientists discovering someday that lettuce
has been fattening all along. But mostly, I worry about surviving. Keeping up
with the times in a world that changes daily. Knowing what to keep and what to
discard. What to accept and what to protest. Never, in the history of this
country, have worriers had such a decade as the seventies.”
Ah … well … if only she could see us
now! We still just worry about surviving. But YOU, August 39ers are celebrating
another UN-birthday—proof of survival!

about ATT-i-tude! What you do from this day
forward is a result of your ATT-i-tude about what went before and what awaits
you. Love it—live it.
39 Years Ago this Month ~ January 1978
We’re still movin’ an’ groovin’ to
December’s leftover Holiday mojo. In fact, as Saturday Night Fever gains cult status, we keep its soundtrack at the top of the
radio music charts ‘til sum—sum—summertime!
Notable notes 39 Years Ago this Month: The Great Blizzard of 1978 pounded the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes regions. Let’s not have a
repeat.
And, while “Stayin’ Alive” had staying power at #3 on San Diego’s B-100 radio survey at month’s
end, it was a two-fer that showed ATT-i-tude at the top of the chart—Queen’s “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions”!
Great way to start the year—let’s do it again!
For 39ers who Follow the Stars …
It’s good that earthy Capricorns take us
into the New Year ( Dec 22-Jan 19; like 39AHC
birthday gal, Erin, right). Their stable, determined ways help us focus after we’ve
picked up the party plates.
Have a Capricorn friend? Good person
to discuss your future with—they’ll support you, while playing Devil’s Advocate
to help you avoid the coming year’s pitfalls.
When we slide into the mid-month
post-Holiday doldrums, luckily, airy Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb
18) is there to brighten up the horizon. Intellectually stimulating, with a
flair for fun, Aquarius will add sunshine to your dark, stormy winter days. But
don’t match up Aquarians with Capricorns—they clash in the cosmos!
The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter ~ Mark Twain.
So true, Mr. Twain (Samuel Clemens, 1835-1910). And nothing so aging as a frown.
Turn that frown upside down, and let’s
get on with the year!
