39ers Aging with ATTitude 😎 August 2026

39ers’ Endless Summer with Just the Right Vibe!

I made it! It’s still the 10th—final day to post 39 And Holding Club article. While it’s a self-imposed posting date (between 1st & 10th), I really get frustrated when I can’t meet my writing deadlines. So I worked feverishly to make it happen. Life has a way of throwing my carefully planned calendar out the window, leaving me in a screaming heap on the floor. OK, a tad exaggeration, but … Hope you enjoy our final Summer vibes!

Happy UN-Birthday AUGUST 39ers! ♪ And many more… ♪ Summer parties notwithstanding, we’re going to the dogs!

No doubt about it—we’re firmly entrenched in the “dog days of Summer.” But take heart—it should only last until around August 11th. BTW, that “should” word is my nemesis in life … so many hopes, dreams and utter disasters revolve around that seemingly innocuous word of the English language …

Speaking of words, have you ever wondered where that phrase, “dog days of Summer” originated? Blame the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, who noticed that the most scorching time of Summer coincides with the rising of Sirius (which translates to “scorching” in Greek (σείριος), otherwise known as the Dog Star—yes, really!
It’s part of the Canis Major constellation that tends to appear for approximately 40 days between July 3rd and August 11th. So look for gradual respite (hopefully) beginning after that date.

To help us keep the dog days on a leash, I found the perfect vintage Song of Note for August. It’s a lighthearted jingle of a song that personifies our Summer ATTitudes. So let’s get to it, shall we?

֎ We Celebrate 39ers ~ And More!
39 and Holding Club is dedicated to all those intrepid souls who have turned 40 years old … and climbing. By this time, we hopefully know a few things about life, love, and the pursuit of happiness. Not necessarily in that order. So, c’mon along as we embrace Aging with ATTitude and enjoy life because of it … or in spite of it … your choice!

AUGUST 39er Strs of the Sky

We always begin with a mini-horoscope for us all. No matter our age, a little perceived help never hurts. It’s followed by a few words of encouragement as we UNwrap the month’s August UN-Birthday Zodiac signs—Leo and Virgo. Here we go …

For all of us: Just like the bold, bright August Summer sun, we don’t hide in the shadows this month. While we have grand plans, we may need to remember they won’t happen without action. Use this month to recognize where to find your basic needs before implementing your grand plan. You might have the attention of others who can contribute but be sure to take the lead. After the middle of the month, the details will emerge.
Give your ideas and ambitions legs—just check first to ensure they’re on solid ground. Take a short, needed rest, 39ers, and by the 28th’s Full Moon, we may more easily separate the obscure from the obvious to make better decisions.

As Leo 39ers (07/23 – 08/22) take strong, confident strides into August, it may become apparent that you need to take a step out of the bright sunlight for a few days to refresh your inner vibe. This helps to let yourself review approach on an important issue. No worries, though. You’ll be your most persuasive and visible self in time to charge full steam ahead with the Full Moon’s power.
Take a little time to check out that sparkling new direction as you head into Fall, Leo. It could have more charm and substance than you think at first glance and offer a fresh path forward. You might benefit from it, even into the New Year.

The beginning of August, dear Virgo 39ers (08/23 – 09/22), may find you looking to your Inner Self for direction before settling on a resolution you thought was set in stone. It sounds more disquieting that it is … you have good instincts … you them wisely. August may feel a tad slow as you reexamine priorities. While you’re comfortable carrying the whole load, it’s likely a little help could point the way to better results. Let your trusted inner circle help!
A personal or professional relationship may need your attention as you move through the end of the month and into September. Is there a noticeable crack that you can quickly remedy? Take a good, long look and know you’ll make the right decision.

So 39ers, looking for a great gift for your Leo or Virgo friend? Think green! The majestic peridot is their birthstone and its association with prosperity and good fortune—and color of money—make it an easy idea sparkler for gifts!

AUGUST Vintage Song of Note
How could I not choose this iconic Summer song for our August Song of Note? With a catchy, funky, Boho sound, it was released by the band,
War, on the first day of Summer (June 21) 1976. Oh, what is its title you ask? Silly … it’s “Summer,” of course!
I dare you to listen to “Summer” and not bounce back-‘n’-forth in a hazy, lazy, Summer vibe. The YouTube link also offers up a steady stream of nostalgic Summer ‘70s images, ending with a fitting Bob Marley (1945-1981) quote, “Sun is shining. Weather is sweet. Make you wanna move your dancing feet.”
Belying their band name, War released a new,
official lyric video at the beginning of this Summer to mark its golden anniversary. The Summer feel-good tune is moving up B-100FM/San Diego, California’s, chart at #22, August 5, 1976. ֎ More AUGUST Fun for Everyone

If you’ve been here before or seen my promotional posts on X, you know I have a fun collection of dollar store (different cheap stores) seasonal signs that personify the Summer vibe and keep me smiling through the often-sweltering heat (yes, even in San Diego). Here’s a smattering of what’s happening this month …

Now, wouldn’t you think a special month dedicated to Romance and most especially, Romance writing, would be in February? Apparently that’s too logical, as Romance Awareness Month is officially in AUGUST! While the sponsoring link is for an article in the LA.Times, it crosses one of my pet peeves, as they think they’re SO special, they need to be behind a paywall.
I refuse to pay for “news” paywalls. So, if you have an L.A.Times subscription, enjoy. I, on the other hand, visited the
Romance Writers of America site for a “real” link to love … Librarians and Booksellers: Host a Romance Awareness Month Event.

August 12th: Let’s celebrate! What? You ask? It’s a HUGE day for World Elephant Day! Since first introduced to nearly every country in the world from Asia and Africa, these giants of the animal kingdom have been popular in zoos, circuses and safaris. The first known elephant arrival in the U.S. was 1796.
But like so many other magnificent creatures of nature, we tend to take elephants’ intelligence and human-like bonds, for granted, thinking they’ll always be part of our lives. World Elephant Day began in 2012, headed by (and still) filmmakers, Patricia Sims (and Michael Clark), and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation. Human interaction has taken a devastating toll on their existence. From Wikipedia, “One conservationist has stated that both African and Asian elephants face extinction within twelve years.” Won’t you help to keep the mostly “gentle giant” from harm and possible extinction? How you can help

August 12th: Perhaps World Elephant Day can be part of your New Moon Musings! Celebrate August’s New Beginnings and today’s New Moon with a fresh look at your part in the whole scheme of things … have you always had interest only for your small nucleus of life? There is so much more … stretch your mind and your natural human capability for caring.

August 17th: Since beginning this article and Blast From Your Past’s50 Years Ago This Month” (2010), I’ve associated today’s Baby Boomer's Recognition Day with music and most especially, Oldies Rock & Roll (1954-1979)! So from the BFYP site, “You really do need to be an official Boomer (born 1946-1964) to enjoy this site’s Baby Boomer’s Recognition Day. Although you’ll recognize many celeb faces they’ve posted info about, it’s a tad out of date here and there, but still fun if you love “the good ol’ days.” Grab your bell bottom jeans and a tie-dyed shirt, and Rock Out! (Be advised, it is NOT a secure site.)”

August 25th-29th: Cha-ching! Think Money, Money, Money! (A fun ABBA tune from 1976.) Why? It’s Numismatic Week! Otherwise known as the “World's Fair of Money,” this year, appropriately enough, it’s held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a close link to the first U.S. Mint, established in Philadelphia in 1792. Have you inherited an old collection of coins or paper money? If you’re in the area, check out their Fair, where you can, “Buy, sell and trade with hundreds of coin dealers, attend lectures and presentations from noted numismatists, and find out what your old coins may be worth!”
Even if you aren’t a coin or money collector, some of their displays of rare monies from around the world are worth the $10/day admission.

August 28th: Look up! Tonight’s Full Sturgeon Moon reminds us the importance of the moon in our daily lives, for centuries. It actually rose first, in the wee hours of the 27th, but doesn’t reach its peak until today. Why “Sturgeon” moon? According to the Almanac, apparently explorer and writer, Captain Jonathan Carver gave it the traditional name while traveling through the Great Lakes Region in 1760s. At that time, the giant lake sturgeon ruled the waters of the Great Lakes, as it reportedly had done for around 136 million years … unfortunately, it isn’t so abundant now.
Whatever you want to call it, Full Sturgeon Moon, or the Dakota’s ancient Harvest Moon, take a few minutes to meditate on its magnificence and let its power guide you through the coming month.

֎ I Wonder …
This is a new, “What The Funny?!” intermittent section that follows my wandering mind through a myriad of things like puzzles, life, science, or – for instance, when recently inquiring Microsoft Word for an alternative form of “klutz” … I wondered what the editors of Microsoft were on when they came up with: “boor, clown, ruffian, lout, fool and jester.” Seriously?! I knew better, so looked it up in a Webster’s dictionary which vindicated my supposition that it means “a clumsy or awkward person.” Makes me a little leery of using Microsoft for my AI-less writing …

NUTS & BOLTS: And dear readers, I just want you to know that I try my best to create an informative, aesthetically creative article for you each month. However, Blogger is not a professional hosting site—but they’re free through Google. So we’re stuck with their crummy platform that doesn’t work well to manipulate images with writing, especially if you aren’t a techie who knows HTML. Trust me, I’ve tried for years to write articles without gaps between paragraphs and even between sentences. Sigh. Maybe I’ll win the lottery and be able to afford a professional hosting site someday.

LinDee Rochelle is a writer and editor by trade, and author by way of Rock & Roll. She has published two books (of three) in her Blast from Your Past series, available on Amazon: Book 1 (currently eBook only, until updated) – Rock & Roll Radio DJs: The First Five Years 1954-1959; and Book 2 (eBook, print & color!) – Rock & Roll Radio DJs: The Swinging Sixties. Coming soon (eventually) … The Psychedelic Seventies!
