39ers Aging with ATTitude 😎 September 2026

Summer’s End: Happy as a Duck or Silly as a Sloth?

Happy UN-Birthday September 39ers! ♪ And many more… ♪ The end of Summer brings on a myriad of emotions at any 39er age. We can happy-dance like a duck into Fall, or lazily ease into it, with the September Sloth Slide and a lopsided smile. Which one are you this year?

As usual, there is a passel of 39er items to help you navigate the first month of Fall. From Zodiac tidbits to a ducky Song of Note, I hope you’ll be entertained and enjoy the ride. Admittedly, it isn’t in polished form yet—images are needed, along with nitpicky editing. In the meantime … there’s plenty to enjoy …

֎ We Celebrate 39ers ~ And More!
39 and Holding Club is dedicated to all those intrepid souls who have turned 40 years old … and climbing. By this time, we hopefully know a few things about life, love, and the pursuit of happiness. Not necessarily in that order. So, c’mon along as we embrace Aging with ATTitude and enjoy life because of it … or in spite of it … your choice!

September’s 39er Strs of the Sky
We always begin with a mini-horoscope for us all. No matter our age, a little perceived help never hurts. It’s followed by a few words of encouragement for September’s Zodiac signs as we UNwrap their UN-Birthday month. Here we go …

For all of us: Are there parts of your life that you simply seem to be going through in the same ol’ way? You know you need a change, but what? Where? Time for a day of reflection and contemplation. What’s working and what is working with a crutch? If it involves others, don’t hesitate to ask for opinions. Add their input to your wise assessments and act with confidence. Do this by mid-month and it’ll set you up to make a significant decision by the light of the Full Moon on the 26th.

It seems, dear Virgo (08/23 – 09/22), you’ve been shouldering more than you feel comfortable with in one of more aspects of your personal or professional life. Is it time to reconfigure your part in everything and ask others for support? Don’t rush it, but aim to decide on your changes by mid-September and make gradual, incremental adjustments. By the 26th’s Full Moon, you’ll be ready to use its power for a final onward push .

Levelheaded Librans (09/23 – 10/22), start September being honest with yourself. Take time to brush the Summer heatwaves from your brain and refresh your attitude at home and in your outer world. You may find yourself caught between two demanding factions; rather than panic, work it through with your usual due diligence … mid-month is a crucial time to invest in your decision to take the next step and move forward, as we ease past the Full Moon.

Do you have a quirky Virgo or fun-loving Libra friend/loved one and don’t know what to surprise them with for their birthday? You can never go wrong with a September sapphire birthstone or a beautiful blue Fall sweater!

September Vintage Song of Note
Every now and then, there has to be a totally inane tune on the music charts, often perhaps, conceived when the songwriter had a toke, popped a pill, or polished off a bottle of Jack D. While fun, and if popular, lucrative, novelty songs pretty much drove everyone nuts before finally fading away.
This month’s September 1976 tune tied in with the current music genre craze—who remembers “The Disco Duck”?! It came complete with comedic quacks.
The Duck made the cover of San Diego’s B-100 while sitting at #13 on its way to the top. Broadcast personality and popular Rock Radio DJ,
Rick Dees, wrote and recorded “Disco Duck” while at WMPS AM 680/Memphis, Tennessee. Well, that is, until he was fired for mentioning on-air that his quirky quacker was almost #1 everywhere else in the country, except Memphis. Most local stations wouldn’t play it, refusing to promote Dees and a rival station. WMPS wouldn’t let him play it—citing conflict of interest. The Duck got to the top without them.

֎ More SEPTEMBER Fun for Everyone
You likely didn’t pay it much attention, if you even knew, September is
Be Kind To Editors & Writers Month! Sadly, an official link is no longer a factor, but the Word Factory offers some “be kind to…” advice for both. And I’m thinking, since I “R” one (editor and writer), and who knows how long we’ll be around, thanks to AI, so we oughta celebrate it while we can! We would appreciate the appreciation, while there are still a few of us “flesh and blood” ones around … reach out and say “Hey!”

Let the cozy Fall Season begin! (Maybe Mother Nature will hear us and cool the heat a tad.) September is also host to National Mulled Cider Month. Are you a fan of the traditional “cool months” beverage? The folks in Oregon, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia, are, and have created a plethora of cider-related festivals this month (see link). Want to visit? Plan now for September 30th’s National Mulled Cider Day.
       Want to try a few
apple cider recipes at home? <Click the link and if you’d like a little more “warmth” on a winter day, as they say, “ … you can add a splash of rum, bourbon, or brandy just before serving.” Ahhhhh

After a Summer of over-indulging, we’re stepping into September’s Healthy Aging Month. No supporting link, but we found a good’un that reminds us “Healthy aging doesn’t start at a certain age or life stage …” Click the link to review some tips from the government’s Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

September 7th: By the time you read this, you may have recovered from your three-day weekend, however, interesting links are associated with this special day for America’s hardworking folks. There are four supporting links … however, they’re all hyping related t-shirts or cards on Zazzle. Hey, that’s what America is all about! The land of opportunity. LOL

September 11th: … is a day of profound meaning, mixed with ethereal wonder and hope for new beginnings … this year it dawns in …

A National Day of Service and Remembrance, as we navigate the 25th anniversary marking the country’s profound loss of New York City’s Twin Towers and the humanity they once proudly held. Additionally, that day in 2001, we were attacked in continued concentrated acts of terrorism with a hijacked jetliner that assaulted the Pentagon; and horrifically, another jet’s passengers were sacrificed as they fought with their attackers to make it miss its target and plunge to the ground.
We lost more than the lives of grandmothers, grandfathers, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, sons, daughters, brothers and sisters. In one day of brutal terrorism, we lost our national sense of peace. In the aftermath, however, we regained our communal pride and vowed heightened protection of our democracy. Have we maintained that goal?
What of today? Have we again, lost our declared devotion to the “United” States of America? Peace comes at a price—that’s the premise our military services are built on—is it time to close ranks again and present a united front? Perhaps it’s time to renew our patriotism and save our democracy.

After thoughts of remembrance, it helps to put current life in perspective. Look to the sky on September 11th to consider its vast blue expanse that can hold more than hijacked jets and brutal enemies. It is also a haven for Cloud Appreciation Day. Have you ever taken a photo of a particularly beautiful cloud formation? You’ll appreciate the sponsor’s Memory Cloud Atlas. Many cloud enthusiasts have contributed to their heavenly atlas. If you’d like to share a photo, be aware, you can ONLY contribute TODAY. But you can view anytime.

And lastly, as September 11th darkens for the day, the New Moon rises to welcome our thoughts of new beginnings. Especially on this date, it is particularly auspicious that we take a few minutes to consider how we might reset the rest of the month and look forward to a fresh start, however small a step it might be.

September 19th: Do you hate getting sucked into research rabbit holes? Then don’t click the link for Talk Like A Pirate Day! Oh, it’s only a Wikipedia link, you say. “I can easily ignore their links.” Really? Do you know what the Pastafarianism movement is? How about filk music? Or intrigued about why popular columnist, Dave Barry is mentioned? If you’re even minimally curious, trust me, you’ll click! Don’t forget your eyepatch … Aaarrr … If you just want a fun Pirate commemorative item, it’s ok to click this one.

September 23rd: Let’s hope Mother Nature is looking at the calendar and realizes it’s the First Day of Autumn (this is the first full day—it began last evening) and with luck, she has put our scorching Summer indeed, behind us.

September 26th: Following on the heels of Autumn, our Full Harvest Moon is unique, says the Almanac. Once upon a time, it’s said to have provided longer evening light to aid farmers trying to complete their harvests. Click the link and learn more about this month’s distinctive moon.

֎ Aging Tip of the Month
Helpful hint for our mind and/or body: This month holds the distinction of being
National Cholesterol Education Month. Although there is a sponsoring link, it isn’t as informative as it could be, so I found an article at the Cleveland Clinic, by way of the Association of Mature American Citizens, that offers educational and helpful tips for learning more about cholesterol and why you should care. Take a minute …

NUTS & BOLTS: And dear readers, I just want you to know that I try my best to create an informative, aesthetically creative article for you each month. However, Blogger is not a professional hosting site—but they’re free through Google. So we’re stuck with their crummy platform that doesn’t work well to manipulate images with writing, especially if you aren’t a techie who knows HTML. Trust me, I’ve tried for years to write articles without gaps between paragraphs and even between sentences. Sigh. Maybe I’ll win the lottery and be able to afford a professional hosting site someday.

LinDee Rochelle is a writer and editor by trade, and author by way of Rock & Roll. She has published two books (of three) in her Blast from Your Past series, available on Amazon: Book 1 (currently eBook only, until updated) – Rock & Roll Radio DJs: The First Five Years 1954-1959; and Book 2 (eBook, print & color!) – Rock & Roll Radio DJs: The Swinging Sixties. Coming soon (eventually) … The Psychedelic Seventies!
